的 【de】can mean possession, such as my student, his book, their pencils, etc. 的 【de】can be ignored for very close persons, such as family and lover but it can’t be ignored for the proper nouns.

When 的【de】means “one” the object can be specified by place the noun at the end of the phrase. 的【de】can be used to assert the sentence. It can act as a linking word between common noun/verb/adjective and 时候 【shíhòu】. You can also learn how to use 得【de】Construction.

Personal pronouns in Chinese

a. Singular

  • I = 我 【wǒ】
  • You = 你 【nǐ】
  • You (formal) = 您 【nín】
  • He = 他 【tā】
  • She = 她 【tā】
  • It = 它 【tā】

b. Plural

  • We = 我们 【wǒmén】

  • You = 你们 【nǐmén】

  • You (formal) = 您们 【nínmén】

  • They = 他们 【tāmén】is used for male, male and female or sometimes for animal.

  • They = 她们 【tāmén】 is used for female or sometimes for female animal.

  • They = 它们【tāmén】 is used for thing or animal.

II. 的 【de】means possession.

a. 的 【de】means possession, such as my student, his book, their pencils, etc.

Grammar: Personal Pronoun + [de] = Possessive Determiner

Singular

  • 我 + 的 = 我的 【wǒ de=my】
  • 你 + 的 = 你的 【nǐ de=your】
  • 您 + 的 = 您的 【nín de=your (formal)】
  • 他 + 的 = 他的 【tā de=his】
  • 她 + 的 = 她的 【tā de=her】
  • 它 + 的 = 它的 【tā de=its】

Plural

  • 我们 + 的 = 我们的 【wǒmén de=our】
  • 你们 + 的 = 你们的 【nǐmén de=your】
  • 您们 + 的 = 您们的 【nínmén de=your (formal)】
  • 他们 + 的 = 他们的 【tāmén de=their】
  • 她们 + 的 = 她们的 【tāmén de=their】
  • 它们 + 的 = 它们的 【tāmén de=their】

Grammar: Personal Pronoun+ [de] + Noun

Example 1:

My student is playing the piano.

我的 wǒ de=my 学生 xuésheng=student 在弹 【zài tán=is playing】 钢琴【gāngqín=piano】

我的 学生 在 弹 钢琴。

Example 2:

My younger sister is eating the bread.

我的 wǒ de=my **妹妹 【mèimèi=younger sister】**在吃 【zài chī=is eating】 面包 【miànbāo=bread】.

我的 妹妹 在 吃 面包.

Or you can say," 妹妹 在 吃 面包 “.

b. 的 【de】 can be ignored for very close persons, such as family and lover.

Example 1:

My father

我的【wǒde=my】爸爸 【bàba 】

我 爸爸

Example 2:

Your younger female cousin

你的【nǐde=your】表姝【biǎomèi= (maternal) younger female cousin】

你 表姝

c. 的【de】can’t be ignored for the proper nouns, such as the name of person, place, animal, thing, etc.

Grammar: Proper Noun+ +Common Noun

Example 1:

President of United States

美国 【Měiguó=United States】+ 的 【de】 + 总统 【zǒngtǒng=president】

美国 + 的 + 总统

Example 2:

Jia Jia’s friend

佳佳【jiā jiā=Jia Jia】+ 的 【de】+ 朋友 【péngyǒu=friend】

佳佳 + 的 + 朋友

III. 的【de】means “one”

Grammar: Adjective +

Example:

I buy the cheap one.

我 【wǒ=I】 买【mǎi=buy】 便宜 piányi=cheap de=one】****.

我 买 便宜 **.**

Grammar: Noun +

Example:

I go to the downtown one.

我 【wǒ=I】 去 【qù=go】 市中心**【shìzhōngxīn=downtown】** 的【de=one】****.

我 去 市中心 .

To specify what the object is, place the noun at the end of the phrase.

Grammar: Adjective + + Noun

Example:

I buy the cheap computer.

我【wǒ=I】 买【mǎi=buy】 便宜**【piányi=cheap】** 的【de 电脑【diànnǎo=computer】****.

我 买 便宜 的 电脑.

Grammar: Noun + + Noun

Example:

I go to the downtown supermarket.

我【wǒ=I】去【qù=go】 市中心**【shìzhōngxīn=downtown】** de 超市 chāoshì=supermarket】****.

我 去 市中心 超市**.**

IV. 的【de】is used to assert the sentence

Example 1:

He certainly will come.

他 【tā=he】 肯定【kěndìng=certainly】 要 【yào=will】 来 【lái=come】 的【de】。

他 肯定 要 来 的。

Example 2:

A: Is it true?

A: 是 【shì】 吗 【ma】?

A: 是吗?

B: Yes, it is.

B: 是 【shì】 de】****.

B: 是 .

V. 的 means “that” or “who”

Example 1:

Which is the rich country?

Literal means, “Which country is the country that has money?”

有 【yǒu=has】 钱 【qián=money】 的 【de=that】 国家 【guójiā=country】 是【shì=is】 哪国 【nǎguó=which country】?

有钱 国家 是 哪国 ?

Example 2:

The computer users are more and more.

Literal means, “People who use computers are more and more”.

用 【yòng=use】 电脑 【diànnǎo=computers】 de=who 人【rén=people】 越来越多 【yuèláiyuèduō=more and more】。

用电脑 人 越来越多。

VI. 的【de】+ 时候 【shíhòu】

的 【de】 acts as a linking word between common noun/verb/adjective and时候 【shíhòu=when, the duration of time】.

a. Grammar: Common Noun+ de】****+ 时候**【shíhòu】**

Example:

When it’s rainy, you may not play outside.

下雨 【xiàyǔ=rainy】 的 【de】 时候【shíhòu=when】 你 【nǐ=you】 不【bù=not】可以【kěyǐ=may】出去【chūqù=outside】 玩【wán=play】.

下雨 的 时候 你 不 可以 出去 玩 .

b. Grammar: Verb + + 时候

Example:

When attending a class, you must listen to the teacher seriously.

上课【shàngkè=attending a class】 的【de】 时候【shíhòu=when】你【nǐ=you】 要【yào=must】 认真【rènzhēn=seriously】 听讲【tīngjiang=listen to a talk】.

上课 的 时候 你 要 认真 听讲.

c. Grammar: Adjective + + 时候

Example:

When I was a kid, I was very lazy.

小【xiǎo=little, kid】 的【de】 时候【shíhòu=when】 我【wǒ=I】 很【hěn=very】 懒惰【lǎnduò=lazy】.

小 的 时候 我 很 懒惰.
