    Preschool Vacation Theme Books

Preschool Teaching Strategies, Advice & Tips / By Tracey Bleakley / Early Education Information for Teachers, Parents & Caregivers

    Going on Vacation

Story time is a favorite time for most preschoolers. Here are some great book choices to read aloud to your preschool children during a vacation theme.

The Night Before Summer Vacation by Natasha Wing

This fun rhyming book is based on the favorite Christmas poem “The Night Before Christmas.” It follows a little girl and her family as they try to get packed for their vacation the following day. It is one book in a series of “The Night Before…” books.

The Berenstain Bears and Too Much Vacation by Stan and Jan Berenstain

Head to the lake with the Berenstain Bears! This family vacation turns out to be full of too many hungry mosquitoes, leaky roofs and other disasters. However when the bears return home and develop the pictures they took, they have fun remembering this terrible vacation. You might also try The Berenstain Bears and Too Much Car Trip for another fun vacation theme book.

Curious George in the Snow by H.A. Rey

This book isn’t one of the original Curious George stories but it is written and illustrated in the same charming style. This Curious George adventure finds George and the man with the yellow hat vacationing at a ski resort to watch a winter sports competition. Your preschoolers will laugh out loud at the trouble George’s curiosity gets him into at the resort.

    The Seashore Bookby Charlotte Zolotow

A little boy and his mother take a trip to the beach without ever leaving their house in the mountains. When the little boy asks his mother to describe the beach to him, she does so is a way that has him imagining that he is really there. This book has beautiful illustrations and poetic language. Your preschoolers will love listening to it.

Counting Our Way to Maine By Maggie Smith

Preschool students will practice counting to twenty as they join a family on their summer vacation to Maine. There’s something to count on each page from babies and dogs to blueberries and sand castles. This book is fun for a vacation theme, but it’s also great for young children who are learning to count.

    Pigs Ahoy! by David McPhail

Imagine planning a relaxing cruise vacation only to find out that you’ll be sharing a cabin with a bunch of rowdy pigs wearing pajamas. That’s exactly what happens to the narrator of this silly, rhyming story. Your preschool students will get a kick out of these pigs that do nothing but cause havoc on the ship.

D.W. All Wet by Marc Brown

D.W. the outspoken little sister from the Arthur the Aardvark series of books stars in her own series now. In D.W. All Wet she’s on a family trip to the beach, but won’t go near the water because she insists she doesn’t like it. She’s doesn’t want to be there and begs to go home, but in the end Arthur helps learn to like the water. This is a great story about trying new things.
