In this 2 part lesson plan we are looking at Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Teaching children about these holidays by use of math, poetry, art, and music. In this second part of the lesson plan we will look at more creative ideas to teach about these holidays and culture such as art, poetry and music.

5. Making a Diorama: Have children bring in a shoe box and teach the students about dioramas. Dioramas are a 3D form of artistic appreciation which will use a shoe box to help set up a 3D scene. Have children use the shoe box and any materials (crayons, construction paper, macaroni, and string) to depict a scene from the book:

Some examples can include the feast of fruit, Challah bread, apples, honey, etc. or the praying at the synagogue.
6. Poetry: Have children learn about Haiku poems. This is a Japanese style of poetry which uses 17 syllables with 5 syllables in the first line 7 syllables in the second line and 5 syllables in the last line. This poem does not rhyme and is just a descriptive poem. Have students write a Haiku for Rosh Hashanah and/or Yom Kippur.

- Challah Bread and Apples too (line 2-7 syllables)
- Fun with Family (line 3- 5 syllables)
7. Music Appreciation: Teach children some songs related to the Jewish and Hebrew culture. Songs for Rosh Hashanah can be found here. One good song to teach is the traditional New Year Song of Shana Tova. These songs listed here are stated in both Hebrew and English.
After this 2 part lesson children will be able to better understand the Jewish culture and two of the important holidays of the culture, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Students will use different academic skills and creative skills in this lesson.
