After this lesson the students will have read Dr. Seuss’s “The Cat in the Hat”, they will have made up their own poem using some of the rhyming words from the book, they will have worked on an art project, they will have worked on a math worksheet, and learned about different parts of a book.
The Lesson Plan:
Introduce the students to Dr. Seuss’s “The Cat in the Hat”. Explain to the children that a book has a title (point out where the title is and explain that it is the name of the book) Have children think of other book titles that they can remember. Point out the author’s name and explain that the author is the one who wrote the book. Explain that a book has a front cover, a back cover, and pages in between.
Read Dr. Seuss’s “The Cat in the Hat”. After reading the book once, ask the children to name a few rhyming words they can remember from the book. As the children name these words write them on the blackboard. Now tell the children that they will use this list of words to make their own poem. Base the amount of words on the age group. For instance if this is for a 1st grade class have children use ten of the twenty words on the board. If this is for second grade then have children use fourteen of the twenty words and so forth.
Children will now make their very own hats. Have children explain the hat in the book. What color was it, what shape was it, how big was it? Now have children use various materials such as cardboard, construction paper, felt, crayons, paint, paper plates, etc. to make their very own one of a kind hat. Tell the children to be creative. The Cat from the book wore a very unique hat, have the students create their hats as to fit their personality!
