Paper Plate Gingerbread Man

You will need:

  • 2 Small paper plates (not plastic or foam)
  • Brown tempera paint
  • Sponge (small piece)
  • Heavy-duty glue or low-temperature glue gun
  • Googly eyes
  • Red pom-pom
  • Rickrack
  • Ribbon or bows
  • Markers

Directions:

  1. Place light brown paint (or mix brown with some white) into the first plate. As you sponge paint the second plate, press lightly so it looks mottled like a cookie. Set this aside to dry.
  2. When the plate is dry it’s time to decorate. Show the class pictures of the gingerbread man from books.
  3. Adhere the plastic googly eyes. Draw eyebrows with a black marker above the eyes.
  4. Use a small red pom-pom for his nose. Then, draw a smile for his mouth.
  5. Decorate with a bow tie. You can use ribbon or any material of your choice.
  6. Glue rickrack along the top edge.

Gingerbread Man Puppet

You will need:

  • Felt
  • Sewing machine (or a glue fixative for seams)
  • Heavy-duty glue or low-temperature glue gun
  • Rickrack (two colors)
  • Googly eyes
  • Red pom-pom
  • Buttons
  • Markers
  • Scissors

Directions:

  1. The teacher can pre-make these puppets or construct them together with the students in class. Follow a pattern and cut out two shapes from felt. Stitch around the sides leaving the bottom open to insert a hand. If a sewing machine is not available you can apply a bead of liquid fixative along the seam lines and press the two pieces of felt together. Set the puppet aside to dry.
  2. When it’s time to decorate the gingerbread man, begin with facial features. Glue the googly eyes and nose. Draw eyebrows and a mouth with markers.
  3. For his clothing, decorate the puppet with several rows of colorful rickrack trim and then glue on some buttons down his shirt.
  4. The child can now insert his/her hand inside the puppet to manipulate and role-play the story.
