Assessment Objectives

The assessment is aligned to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics – Grade 6 – Ratio and Proportional Relationships

6.RP.1 Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities.

6.RP.2 Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ration a:b with b 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship.

6.RP.3 Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real world and mathematical problems.

6.RP.3a Make tables of equivalent ratio relating quantities with whole-number measurements, find missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios.

6.RP.3b Solve unit rate problems, including those involving unit pricing and constant speed.

6.RP.3c Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100; solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent.

6.RP.3d Use ratio reasoning to convert measurement units; manipulate and transform units appropriately when multiplying or dividing quantities.

Materials Required

  • Graph paper
  • Calculator

Independent Work

1. Write a ratio to show the relationship between 4 wheels on a car and 1 steering wheel in a car. Provide the three different ways the ratio can be written.

2. Write a description and an explanation for the ratio of 7 red blocks to 5 blue blocks.

3. A package containing 5 neon markers cost $4.95. What is the cost of one marker?

4. A package containing 12 highlighters cost $4.80. What is the cost of one highlighter?

5. Use rate language to describe the ratio relationship between the two quantities. Emily paid $3.60 for a package of 24 mechanical pencils.

6. On the table below, show the cost for each of the number of dry erase markers. One dry erase marker cost $0.60.

7.

On the coordinate plane below, plot the pairs of values.

8. The ratio of correct answers to the total questions on the test is 80 to 100. There were a total of 15 questions on the test. How many questions were answered correctly?

9. Of the 1,300 children in the local school, 12% of the children in the school are left-handed. How many children are left handed?

10. Write the ratio to show the relationship between ounces and pounds. Provide the three different ways the ratio can be written.

16 ounces = 1 pound

11. How many ounces are equal to 3 pounds?

12. How many pounds are equal to 80 ounces?

Answers

1. 4 to 1, 4:1, 4/1

2. The ratio of red blocks to blue blocks is 7:5, because for every 7 red blocks there are 5 blue blocks.

3. $0.99

4. $.40

5. Emily paid $3.60 for 24 mechanical pencils, so $0.15 was the cost of 1 mechanical pencil.

8.  12 questions

9.  156 children are left handed

10. 16 to 1, 16 : 1, 16/1

11. 48 ounces

12. 5 pounds
