    Costume Ideas

Percy is a fictional character, and the narrator of the series. For that reason, the reader is given few direct statements about Percy's physical characteristics. However, looking at the books, author Rick Riordan does give the reader a few clues about traits which could be used to create a Percy Jackson costume.

For instance, on the cover of The Lightening Thief, we can see that Percy is a young boy with dark hair. In fact, in the first book, Percy tells us himself that he is 12 years old, and his mother mentions that Percy possesses his father's black hair and green eyes. If you do not have dark hair naturally, a dark wig will do the trick.

Before Percy arrives at Camp Half-Blood, he must endure a battle of epic proportions against a Minotaur. His trophy for winning is thetheseus and the minotaur statue-other  Minotaur's horn. One of the props you could carry as part of your costume would be a horn you fashion yourself from paper mache.

Once inside the camp, Percy notes that the campers are all wearing the same bright orange tshirt with the words CAMP HALF-BLOOD emblazoned on the front. This would be a perfect thing to wear, along with the more typical teenage attire of jeans. Making your own tshirt is easy. Iron-on letters can be purchased at your local craft or sewing shop, or written on with permanent marker in a pinch. Walmart offers a terrific selection of inexpensive tshirts. If you can not find orange, you may want to consider dying a white shirt, instead.

05459l2488 We also learn in The Lightening Thief that Percy has a fondness for foods which are blue. You could add sticks of blue licorice whips so that they are hanging out of your back pocket, carry blue Gatorade, or keep a handful of blue M&Ms in your pocket to offer people as you assume the character's identity.

Of course, Percy's most notable feature is his weapon - a sword nicknamed "Riptide." You can make your own sword and write Riptide on the side. However, if you are planning on wearing your Percy Jackson costume to school, weapons may not be allowed. In that case, you couldmake a lightening bolt to carry, instead - reminiscent of Percy's quest in The Lightening Thief.
