Language Arts Games for Parts of Speech
Students generally grumble and groan when a lesson on the eight parts of speech is introduced. The key to students “tuning in” instead of “tuning out” is to make it fun. Try this game to see if students can identify the eight parts of speech in teams.
How to Play
Object of the Game: Students will be placed in teams of four to five students. Each team will be given eight Post-its. Assign each team a different color. Written on each Post-it will be one of the eight parts of speech: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, pronoun, interjection, and conjunction. The team to “post” all eight Post-its correctly on the 10 sentences around the room will win a small prize, such as a piece of candy.
Stick-It the Quickest
Preparation: Write 10 sentences in large hand writing that include all eight parts of speech on large easel paper, or write the 10 sentences on several boards in the room. Depending on the size of the class, more or fewer sentences may be needed. The sentences should include several examples of all parts of speech.

Sentences that could be used are as follows:

Wow, you are the best teacher.

Bobby took his dirty bat to the room, and he found his ball.

Darn, we lost the game to the Dragons, but Darin had a home run.

The ugly sprout grew quickly into a lovely flower.

Sure, we have that expensive part in stock at our store, and it is on sale.

Marilyn played carefully with the two-year-old, yet she laughed cheerfully the whole time.

Whew, I sweat constantly in the blazing sun.

Darn, they never win against the big Lincoln team or the fast team from Brownsville.

Tommy had his football pads, helmet and cleats packed tightly in his purple duffel bag.

Ouch! I just pinched my index finger in the front door.
After the first team has finished, check for accuracy. If this team does not have all of the Post-its correctly placed, then allow all the teams to keep going. (This includes the team that can now fix the wrong placements.) Keep doing this until one team has all its Post-its in the correct places.
