Chinese mandarin characters原来 【yuánlái】and 本来【běnlái】are interchangeable when they mean “original,” “at first,” or “originally”. They are used to express when the original thing has changed or is still the same as before. As adverbs, they can be placed before or after the subject.

原来【yuánlái=all along, as a matter of fact】as an adverb, is used to express when someone used to not know about something but is now aware of it.

I.The Use of 本来【běnlái】

本来 【běnlái=original】is used to express when the original thing has changed or is still the same as before.

a. 本来 **【běnlái】**as an adjective

本来 【běnlái】+ 的【de】

Example:

The original color of phone was black.

电话【diànhuà=phone】 本来【běnlái=original】的【de】颜色【yánsè=color】 是【shì=is】 黑色【hēisè=black】 的【de】。

It means, “The original color of phone was black but now it’s changed”.

电话 本来 颜色 是 黑色 的。

b. 本来 **【běnlái=of course】**as an adverb

Example:

Of course, the soccer fans are a lot.

喜欢 【xǐhuān= love】 足球【zúqiú=soccer】 的【de】 本来【běnlái=of course就【jiù】多【duō=a lot】。

喜欢 足球 的 本来 多。

本来 【běnlái=at first, originally】as an adverb, it can be placed before or after subject.

Example:

At first, he was not a good person but he has repented now.

Originally, he was not a good person but he has repented now.

他 【tā=he】 本来【běnlái=at first, originally】 不是【bùshì=is not】 好【hǎo=good】 人【rén=people】,但是【dànshì=but】 现在【xiànzài=now】 改过【gǎiguò=repent】 了【le】。

本来 不是 好人,但是 现在 改过 了。

II.The Use of 原来【yuánlái】

a. 原来【yuánlái=original, originally】can also be used to express when the original thing has now changed or is still the same as before.

**原来【yuánlái=original】**as an adjective

原来【yuánlái】+ 的【de】

Example:

Long times no see, you still look the same as before.

Literary means, “Long times no see you still look like an original”.

好久【hǎojiǔ=long time】不见【bùjiàn=not see】,你【nǐ=you】还是【háishì=still】原来【yuánlái=original】的【de】样子【yàngzi=appearance】。

好久 不见,你 还是 原来 样子。

Example:

No wonder he turned off his mobile and as a matter of fact, it’s out of power.

怪不得【guàibùde=no wonder】 他【tā=he】 不【bù=not】开【kāi=open】 手机【shǒujī=mobile】 原来【yuánlái=as a matter of fact】 没【méi=not】 电【diàn=electricity 】 了【le】。

怪不得 他 不 开 手机 原来 没 电 了。
