Two Beginner Level French Verb Tests: Etre and Avoir
Teach Past Participles
Before giving the following test, it is necessary to reinforce the students’ knowledge of the past participles which go with the fifteen verbs conjugated with être. Let them learn these like a poem, so they will be easier to remember. At a later stage, you will test them on some of these verbs which can also be used with avoir, depending on the circumstance.
In the book 1001 Pitfalls in French by James H. Grew and Daniel D Olivier, one of the authors included these past participles in a group so as to aid in memorizing them. This memory aid is as follows:

Grading and Assessment
Give students 20 mins to complete these two tests. Some students would complete them in less time. Give 1 point for each correct answer. These tests will help the teacher to know whether or not the students grasped the concept of not only the correct verb to be used in the case of être and avoir, but the correct form of the verb. In the case of the prepositions, the teacher will know whether the students need more practice in differentiating when to à or de with the verb, and also which form of the preposition to use.
