It is just as important for students to have fun as it is for them to do book work. Teachers might want to consider including an unexpected game into their schedule every once in a while. This is a list of 5 great Thanksgiving games you can play with your students.

1. Pin the Wattle on the Turkey. Get a large piece of poster board and draw a turkey on it minus the wattle. You can color it in or just have the outline if you are not very artistic. Make up a bunch of wattles out of red cardboard and place a piece of double-sided tape on the top of each. Blindfold each student one at a time, spin them around, and then let them pin their wattle on the turkey. The student that gets the it closest to its correct location is the winner.

2. Turkey Spelling Game. This can be done in place of a spelling lesson. Write the letters T U R K E Y on the chalkboard. Then have each student come up to the board one at a time and write out a word that only uses the letters from the word turkey. You can split the room up into two teams and give each team a point as they come up with a word. The team with the most points when no other words can be made, wins.

3. Thanksgiving Matching Game. Matching games are great for improving memory. Draw two each of the following Thanksgiving symbols on pieces of paper: turkey, corn, pilgrim, Indian, pumpkin, leaves, fish, canoe, log cabin, and teepee. Mix the drawings up and lay them on the ground. Separate the students into teams. You can have up to four teams. The team with the most matches at the end of the game wins.

4. Popcorn Race. Divide the class into two teams. Let the students make up their team names. Set up two bowls (1 empty and 1 of popcorn) for each team. Make sure the bowls are on opposite sides of the room. Make sure each bowl contains the same number of popcorn kernels. Put the students in a line and give each student in the first position a spoon. Students must transport the popcorn from one side of the room to the other. The first team with all of their popcorn transported wins.

5. Scavenger Hunt. Find 5 to 8 objects that represent Thanksgiving that you can hide. That could be a mini pumpkin, turkey sculpture, ear of corn, Indian artifact, etc. Give the students the list of items you want them to find. Divide the students up into two teams. Have Team 1 go in first and time how long it takes them to find all of the objects. Then bring them out and place the items back into place. Have Team 2 find all of the objects. The team that finds them all the fastest wins.
