I.Examples of 都【dōu】

a. 都【dōu=all】can be used before a verb.

Example:

All these things are new.

这些【zhèxiē=these】 东西【dōngxi=thing】 都【dōu=all 是【shì=are 新【xīn=new】 的【de】。

(是【shì=am, is, are, be】is the verb).

这些 东西 新 的。

b. 都【dōu=all】can be used before an adjective.

Example:

All of you speak very well.

你们【nǐmen=you (second person plural)】 说【shuō=speak】 得【de】 都【dōu=all 很【hěn=very】 好【hǎo=good

(好【hǎo=good】is the adjective).

你们 说 得

c. 都【dōu=all】can also be used before a negating word.

Example:

All of us don’t drink cold water.

我们【wǒmén=we】 都【dōu=all 不【bù=not 喝【hē=drink】 冷水【lěngshuǐ=cold water】。

我们 喝 冷水。

II. Examples of 所有【suǒyǒu】

所有【suǒyǒu=all】is used before a noun and often followed by 的【de】. Here 的【de】acts as the connection between所有【suǒyǒu=all】and the noun.

Example:

I want to go to all of USA cities.

我【wǒ=I】 想【xiǎng=want to】 去【qù=go】 美国【Měiguó=USA】 所有【suǒyǒu=all**】** 的【de 城市【chéngshì=city】。

(城市【chéngshì=city】is the noun)

我 想 去 美国 所有 城市

III. Examples of 都【dōu】and 所有【suǒyǒu】 When Used Together in the Same Sentence.

Example 1:

Do you think all people are same with you?

你【nǐ=you】 以为【yǐwéi=think】 所有【suǒyǒu=all 的【de】 人【rén=people】 都【dōu=all 和【hé=and】 你【nǐ=you】 一样【yīyàng=the same】 吗【ma】?

你 以为 所有 的 人 和 你 一样 吗?

Example 2:

All of my weariness is gone.

我【wǒ=I】 所有【suǒyǒu=all】 的【de】 辛苦【xīnkǔ=weariness】 都【dōu=all】 没【méi=disappear】 了【le】。

我 所有 的 辛苦 都 没 了。

IV. Similar Examples of 都【dōu】 and 所有 【suǒyǒu】 When Used in the Same Sentence

Example 1a:

All these things are new.

这些【zhèxiē=these】 东西【dōngxi=thing】 都【dōu=all 是【shì=are】 新【xīn=new】 的【de】。

这些 东西 是 新 的。

Compared with example 1b:

All things are new.

所有【suǒyǒu=all】 的【de】 东西【dōngxi=thing】 都【dōu=all 是【shì=are】 新【xīn=new】 的【de】。

所有 的 东西 是 新 的。

Example 2a:

All of them don’t know what he means.

他们【tāmen=they】 都【dōu=all 不【bù=not 知道【zhīdào=know】 他的【tāde=his】 意思【yìsī=meaning】。

他们 知道 他的 意思。

Compared with example 2b:

Everyone doesn’t know what he means.

All people don’t know what he means.

所有【suǒyǒu=all】 的【de】 人【rén=people】 都【dōu=all 不【bù=not 知道【zhīdào=know】 他的【tāde=his】 意思【yìsī=meaning】。

所有 的 人 知道 他的 意思。
